679,060. Hydraulic machines. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., CUSSONS, R. C., and KNIGHTS, R. N. May 15, 1951 [May 11, 1950], No. 11803/50. Class 69 (ii). A variable length strut comprises an outer cylinder 11 with a piston 12 slidable therein, an inner cylinder 13 movable as one with the piston 12 and having a piston 14, the rod of which extends out through the inner and outer cylinders, and ports 20, 19 through which pressure fluid enters to move the pistons in opposite directions to bring the strut into a length which is intermediate its maximum and minimum lengths. The piston 14 operates as a plunger with a head 18 for limiting outward movement, and the end face of the cylinder 11 has a vent hole 21. Pressure fluid entering at 20 moves the piston 12 to the right, and enters through port 19 to move piston 14 to the left to the positions shown in Fig. 1. When the connection 20 is placed in communication with a return line the pistons are free to move in either direction so that the strut is free to extend to its maximum length or to retract to its minimum.
