Abstract

632,496. Hydro-pneumatic shock-absorbers. NEWTON, N. B. Feb. 14, 1945, No. 3672. Drawing to Specification. [Class 108 (iii)] The invention relates to a suspension device of the kind comprising a piston, piston-rod and sealing gland, and a cylinder connected to a displacement space, a resilient cushion exerting a pressure on hydraulic liquid in the displacement space, the arrangement being such that inward movement of the piston relative to the cylinder produces displacement of the liquid against the resilience of the cushion and damping movement of the liquid through controlled passages. According to the invention, the device comprises a second piston located in the displacement space between the liquid and the cushion, means for limiting the outward movement of the second piston under return action of the cushion, an entry port to the periphery of the piston-rod above the gland, and means for connecting the entry port to the cylinder when the piston is in its fully-extended position. The cushion comprises air under pressure above the second piston which is in the form of an annular floating piston 14 (see drawing of Specification 632,497) in the displacement space 13<SP>1</SP> which is connected at its lower end by ports 16 and a valve 17 to the bottom of the cylinder 11. The gland is a high-pressure gland 19 and between this and a low-pressure gland 21 is a fluidholding space 20 connected by a pipe-line 22 to a reservoir 23. The piston-rod 12 is reduced in diameter adjacent the piston 10 at 12b so that when it is fully retracted liquid flows by gravity from the reservoir 23 via space 20 and fills the cylinder 11. In making this adjustment the air pressure in the cushion is first charged through a valve 15 to a predetermined figure and this drives down the floating piston 14 to close the ports 16 when the piston-rod 12 is retracted. The space 20 may be provided with an air-release screw or may be connected to the air space of the reservoir 23 by a second pipeline.
