Abstract

1,109,763. Pistons. B.A.L. Ltd. 21 Sept., 1965 [1 Oct., 1964], No. 39946/64. Heading F2T. A piston-and-cylinder assembly comprises a piston body 1, resilient packing 15 and a bearing ring 17 which locates the packing adjacent a peripheral shoulder on the body. As shown in Fig. 1 for a double acting piston, a packing 15 and a bearing-ring 17 are disposed on each side of an annular flange 13 on the body 1 and each packing comprises nested rings 15a, the ring adjacent the flange carrying an anti-extrusion ring 16. Each ring 17 is mounted in a groove 14 in the body 1 and has a tongue 17a engaging the adjacent packing ring. Grooves 18 in the bearing rings 17 allow fluid pressure to act on the packing rings. The rings 17 are split and of synthetic resin material. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the resilient packing comprises a single ring (20). In a further modification the ring 17 is made of metal and formed from two halves.
