Abstract

1,140,009. Piston packing. CROSS MFG., CO. (1938) Ltd. 21 June, 1967 [9 May, 1967], No. 21404/67. Heading F2T. An hydraulic piston is packed by thin elastomeric rings 6 sandwiched between metal rings 5 of substantially the same diameter as the elastomeric ones. The elastomeric rings may be made of nylon or P.T.F.E. and are a close sliding fit against the cylinder wall 4. The packing is retained by split bearer rings 7, 11 with or without springs 9. Hydraulic pressure causes the elastomeric rings to be squeezed radially against both the piston and the cylinder walls 2, 4.
