Abstract

Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises two trains having some elements joined and is adapted to be operated by a sliding internally toothed element such as G, Fig. 1, so as to yield a solid drive and two reduced speeds. Stepped sun gears a', a<2> fast on a driving-shaft A mesh with planet gears E, D separately mounted in a cage C secured to a driven shaft B. The element G has teeth of double width so as to engage the gears D, E simultaneously. In this configuration, the gearing is locked and turns solid. When the ring G is slid upwards of Fig. 1, recesses g<2> upon it are engaged by snugs f<6> on a fixed casing F, and the gears E become disengaged; the gears D roll round on the fixed ring G yielding a middle speed. The slow speed is produced in like manner when the ring G is locked by snugs f<7>, and engages the gears E only. The changes are effected by sliding a non-revoluble and lockable ring H outside the casing F. In a modification, the solid drive is produced when the internal ring engages simultaneously the planet gears of one train and teeth on the cage. In another arrangement shown in Fig. 5, stepped planet gears N, N<1> carried by a cage M fast upon the driven shaft L mesh with a single sun gear k<1> upon the driving- shaft K. This is operated by a sliding internal ring 0 of double width similar to the ring G of Fig. 1. The ring 0 entrains with the gears N' through a floating ring P having internal and external teeth.
