166,735. Fisher, J. W. April 28, 1920. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing is controlled by worm gearing and disc-and-roller friction gearing arranged as shown. The driving-shaft M carries a friction disc E and one side gear L<2> of the epicyclic train. The other side gear L is secured to an aligned driven shaft A. Planet gears L', L'<3> meshing with these gears are carried in a casing W, to which is secured a bevel-wheel Y. A worm-wheel D meshes with worms B, C on parallel shafts N, N'. A pinion F on the shaft N meshes with the bevel-wheel Y. A roller G upon the shaft N<1> is adapted to engage the face of the disc E. In the arrange-- ment shown, the disc G engages a loose ring E', the worm gearing and casino Ware at rest, and the shaft A is driven oppositely to the shaft M at equal speed. As the roller G is moved upwards, the speed of the shaft A falls gradually to zero, and then is reversed. The invention is suitable for motor-vehicles, lathes, and drills.
