Abstract

154,382. Birmingham Small Arms Co., and Poole, H. Sept. 19, 1919. Turning-gear.-A kick starter for motor-cycles &c. comprises a crank-operated spindle 1 enclosed in the casing of a change-speed gear and carrying a toothed quadrant 14 for engagement with an idler pinion meshing with a pinion 25 in ratchet connexion with a pinion 23, which is loose on the lay-shaft 24 and meshes with a pinion 32 fixed on the main shaft 33. The pinion 25 has ratchet teeth 29 in engagement with a ratchet member 27 slidable on the extended hub 22 of the pinion 23 and held in engagement by a spring 30. The main shaft 33 of the gear is connected to the engine shaft by chain gearing, and the first tooth of the quadrant 14 may be pressed radially outwards by a spring.
