Abstract

141,789. Thomas, J. G. P. Jan. 18, 1919. Fluid governors; transmitting-mechanism. - An engine governor comprises a jet movable under the reaction of fluid issuing from it, means driven by the engine for pumping fluid through the jet, and means actuated by the movement of the jet for controlling the engine speed. In one form, the jet 2 is carried by a hollow arm 1 provided with a recessed boss 3 pivoted on a hollow spindle 4, which is open to the pump delivery 5. The boss 3 is connected by flexible joints on a shaft 7 to the spindle 8 of the throttle valve. On the shaft 7 is pivoted, with lost motion, the throttle pedal 10 or a lever connected to it, and pressed upwards by a spring, so that when released, the shoulders 11, 12 engage and the throttle is closed to an extent limited by a stop 17, but when pressed down, the throttle spindle follows it only so far as the governor allows. The movement of the arm 1 may be resisted by a spring or bv piston exposed to the fluid pressure and pressed upwards by a spring 16. To vary the speed at which the governor operates, a valvecontrolled by-pass may be provided between the pump and the arm 1. To compensate for leakage in the pump through thinning of the oil by increase of temperature, a constriction is provided in the passage between the pump and the arms 1, so as to provide a resistance to flow that increases rapidly with increase in the viscosity of the oil.
