Abstract

Automatic gear. - Valve-gear of the kind wherein the valve motion is taken from a rocking lever having a variable position or operative throw is adjusted by a governor having fluid-pressure transmitting-gear. The governor shaft 1, Fig. 1, drives through toothed gearing a shaft 4, which operates continuously a pump provided with suction and delivery valves 12, 13, and adapted to force oil or other liquid along a passage 7, which communicates with a cylinder 8 containing a ram 9. The passage 7 has two outlets 14, 15, Fig. 3, leading into the oil reservoir. One of the outlets is controlled by a valve 16 actuated by the governor, and the other by a valve 17 operated by the starting-lever. The mechanism connecting the starting-lever with the throttle valve is arranged so that the first movement of the lever does not close the valve 17 and the engine is under the control of the driver. When the valve 17 is closed, if the speed of the engine increases and causes the governor to rise, the valve 16 is closed, and the ram 9 forced up to produce an earlier cut-off.
