Abstract
141,443. Dicker, S. G. S., (Stromberg Motor Devices Co.). Jan. 22, 1919. Spray carburettors are provided with an annular suction-actuated supplementary air-valve seated on the Venturi tube, this valve being connected to the main air valve, to a fuel valve, and to a dashpot piston working in the fuel chamber. The carburettor is provided with two independently-operated butterfly-valves 17, 9. Supplementary air is admitted from an opening (not shown) by an annular suction-operated valve 30 normally resting on the Venturi tube 23. This valve may be weighted, but, in the form shown, is controlled by a lever, one end of which is connected to the valve 17, and the other to a dash-pot plunger 40 working in a well communicating with the float chamber. The supply of fuel to the main nozzle is controlled by a needle valve 55, Fig. 7, carried by the air valve 30, so that as this valve opens to admit more air, the fuel supply is also increased. An adjustable pilot nozzle 95, near the throttle 9, is fed from a passage 103 below the needle valve 55, and takes its air supply from the space just below the throttle. The main nozzle comprises an outer member 19, and inner tubes 70, 74 having an annular space between them opening into a small chamber 77. The tube 70 is perforated, as at 80, and has heads at each end, forming two other chambers 72, 57, comunication between which is limited by holes 73. The chambers 72, 77 are independently supplied with air through small orifices situated above the normal fuel level, the supply to the chamber 77 being controlled by a needle valve connected to the throttle 9, so that as the throttle is closed, more air is admitted to the nozzle. In the modification where the annular air valve 30 is weighted, the dash-pot 40 is combined with the needle valve 55, and a passage leads from the needle-valve chamber to the Venturi tube, so that as the air valve lifts and raises the needle valve, fuel is lifted by the plunger 40 and passes into the Venturi tube.
