Abstract

144,680. Booty, P. C. P. Jan. 11, 1918, [Convention date]. Spray carburettors.-A suction-actuated member controls, in a uniform ratio, the air and fuel supplies, and manually adjustable means controllable from a distance are provided to vary such ratio. Air enters at 11, fuel through an orifice 20 in the nozzle 17, and mixture leaves at 12. A suction-actuated piston 36 in an enlargement 14 of the carburettor passage carries loosely from a spider 42 a grooved needle valve 38 and has a depending tubular portion 35 which carries at its lower end an annular piston 37 which serves', in conjunction with an adjustable conical part 34 on the nozzle, to vary the air supply. The pistons 36, 37 are a fairly clooe fit in their casings and the piston 37 is perforated at 46 to prevent fluttering. The fuel valve groove 39 increases in depth downwardly, and at the lower end of the valve is a perforated piston which serves to augment the fuel supply during rapid acceleration. To obtain a rich mixture at starting and to vary the proportion of air to fuel during normal running the cone 34 may be raised manually through a lever 47. Fuel is supplied to the float chamber through a column 23 and is controlled by a valve 25 supported on the float 22. In a modification, the piston 36, in order to prevent leakage past its edge, is provided with a light bellows diaphragm.
