Abstract

151,501. Tucker, J. D., and Tucker, E. M. Nov. 19, 1919. Spray carburettors.-Relates to carburettors of the kind wherein the mixing-chamber is divided into two portions by a suction-actuated valve which is connected to the fuel valve. According to the invention, the fuel nozzle is located in a lateraliy perforated tube, the upper end of which is flared outwardly and forms the seat of an annular conical valve, which is also lifted by suction to admit additional air, and by its conical formation directs such air downwards on to the fuel nozzle. As shown in Fig. 1, the two portions of the mixing chamber are separated by a conical valve 28 mounted on the spindle 27 of the needle valve 26 which controls the fuel supply to the jet 8, the upper end of the spindle working in a dashpot 31. The walls of the secondary mixing chamber are sloped so that the area around the valve' 28 'bears a constant relation to the amount of fuel drawn from the jet 8. Primary air, the supply of which is separately controllable, is directed on to the nozzle of the jet through orifices 20 in a sleeve 18 surrounding the jet. Increased speed of the engine opens by suction a spring-pressed annular conical valve 21 and admits more air into the mixing chamber 1. The seat 19 of the valve 21 is integral with the sleeve 18, and is arranged so that the additional air as it enters the chamber 1 is directed inwards on to the nozzle of the jet 8. The valve 21 is connected by wires 24 to a dash-pot piston 23. Two float chambers 3, 4 are provided to supply different fuels, in accordance with the setting of a four-way cock 6. The valve needle 2G is slightly cut away, as shown at 26<a>, Fig. 3, to allow passage of fuel to start the engine while the valve remains in its seat.
