Abstract

200,580. Ellis, G. B., (Taylor, R. H., and Heftler, V. R.). April 12, 1922. Spray carburettors. - Carburettors of the type having (1) two nozzles, one delivering fuel normally and the other having a constant delivery per unit of time, and (2) a slow-running nozzle, adjacent to the throttle valve, which is fed from an atmospheric-well, are provided with an additional fuel-supply orifice which comes into .action when the throttle is suddenly opened. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an atmospheric-well 9 is fed from the float chamber 2 by a pipe 10 having a series of orifices 11. The compensating nozzle 12, which surrounds the main nozzle 5, is supplied from a branch 13, and the slow-running nozzle 18 is supplied from a branch 14 through a nozzle 16 above which are air inlets 17. A second atmospheric-well 19 is fed from the first well by a passage 20 and, on opening the throttle 8, supplies fuel alone through a suction-tube 21. In a modification, fuel is fed into the first atmospheric-well through a calibrated orifice instead of the pipe 10 and a quill leads from the bottom of the second well to a point on the engine side of the throttle valve. According to a second modification, the flow of fuel into the first atmosphericwell 29, Figs. 5 and 6, is controlled by a needle valve 31, a screen 30 covering the opening of the well to the atmosphere. The second well 24 is in communication with the first well by a passage 20. When the throttle valve 8 is first opened pure fuel is drawn through the orifice 18 from both the wells through the quills 26, 32. When the engine has started and the fuel in the well 24 'has been delivered, the quill 26 will discharge air to be carburetted at the nozzle 33. A needle valve 35 controls the flow from the quill 26. The part 37 of the carburettor may be made of non- corrosive material. Specifications 6656/07 and 7736/07 are referred to.
