Abstract

161,136. Guthrie, W. S. Dec. 30, 1919. Spray carburettors.-In carburettors having a main and an auxiliary nozzle in separate chambers the auxiliary chamber receiving its air from the main chamber intake, the auxiliary nozzle is of relatively large bore near its base. The main nozzle 10 and the auxiliary nozzle 30 are located respectively in a main mixing-chamber 3 and an auxiliary mixing chamber 31 which discharges into the main mixing-chamber near the edge of a throttle valve 4 through a valve-controlled or a calibrated orifice 33. Air to the auxiliary chamber 31 is taken from the main passage and enters through a port 32 of cross-sectional area less than that around the nozzle 30 in order to prevent noise. A valve 5 controls the air inlet 2, from the nozzle side of which supplementary air passes through conduits 40, 41 to dilute the mixture as described in Specification 160,927. The nozzles are fed from a passage 9 which communicates with the float chamber 6 through a valve-controlled or a calibrated orifice 36. The orifice may pass slightly more fuel than is necessary, and the valve when seated may not entirely cut off the flow. At low speeds, mixture, is sup. plied from the passage 31 but, as the throttle is opened and the speed increases, air enters the nozzle 30 and passing downwardly mixes with the fuel on its way to the main nozzle, 10, whilst at the same time the passages 40, 41 come into action. The auxiliary nozzle being in its lower part of large bore serves as a reservoir to augment the supply of fuel to the main nozzle during acceleration.
