Abstract

708,711. Spray carburetters; treating charge. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Feb. 21, 1949 [Aug. 6, 1948; Oct. 27, 1948; Oct. 27, 1948], Nos. 4661/49, 4662/49 and 4663/49. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) Anti-detonant from a float chamber 17, Fig. 2, is fed to the intake manifold or carburetter mixing passage past a metering valve 70 controlled by a diaphragm 22 subjected to intake manifold suction, the valve 70 having a bore 75 through which air flows to weaken the anti-detonant above a predetermined intake manifold suction. The anti-detonant preferably undergoes an initial aeration in a tube 62 and at high power outputs i.e. low manifold suction, an orifice 74 rests on a member 77 to close the auxiliary air bore 75, whereby a rich anti-detonant-air mixture is fed to a nozzle 15 in a flange 11 between the carburetter outlet 12 and intake manifold 13. When the suction increases, the valve 70 moves towards its seat 59, reducing the antidetonant flow and simultaneously admitting air through the bore 75 to weaken the anti-detonant mixture. At idling the valve 70 contacts its seat 59 and cuts off both the anti-detonant and the auxiliary air flow. In a modification the member 77 is replaced by a flat resilient pad and in Fig. 6 the auxiliary air passage 89 in the valve 70 co-operates with a recess 92 so that the air is only supplied over a short range between full open and closed position of the valve 70. The flange 11 may be positioned adjacent the carburetter Venturi so that the nozzle 15 opens into the lower part of the Venturi, and in Fig. 9 the anti-detonant device is bolted to a flat face 115 on the Venturi tube 112 and the anti-detonant is delivered through a nozzle 158 the outlet 159 of which is situated in the Venturi throat 125a and adjacent the outlet of an auxiliary Venturi 126 into which the main fuel nozzle 127 delivers. The carburetter has a choke valve 133 with a spring-loaded suction operated valve combined therewith and the throttle valve 123 is arranged in a conduit member 122 separate from and bolted to the main carburetter body 112. A power jet 128 has a spring-loaded valve therein controlled by a piston 130 actuated by intake manifold suction.
