Abstract

1406292 Developing electrostatic latent images XEROX CORP 12 Sept 1972 [14 Sept 1971] 42322/72 Heading G2H Toner particles clinging to the surface of a moving member 20 are removed by a cascading mixture of carrier particles and toner particles, and by application of an electrostatic potential between the member and portions 101, 102 of an electrode 10; then as the cleaned portions of the member surface pass to being opposite further electrode portions 103-106 the potential is reversed, and the member surface receives toner in place of being stripped of it. The member 20 may be a donor member, which supplies toner to an image-bearing photo-conductive member 30, and must have an even coating of toner particles 124 to avoid uneven development. Alternatively the member 20 may itself be photo-conductive, and carry a latent electrostatic image which is developed. The member 20 may be a cylinder, a flat plate or an endless belt, and the electrode 10 may be divided into sections by insulation 107, be in the form of a grid of parallel wires, or be composed of glass or ceramic in one piece, with a resistivity of the order of 10<SP>12</SP> ohm-centimetres, or with a resistivity of the order of 10<SP>1</SP><SP>6</SP> ohmcentimetres and a thin outer coating of metal, carbon or conductive plastics material. Application of a uniform D.C. potential across such a one-piece electrode results in a varying potential along its length with respect to the fixed potential of the member 20.
