Abstract

1,214,155. Electro-photographic process. RANK XEROX Ltd. Nov.17, 1967 [Nov.18, 1966], No.52323/67. Heading G2H. In an electro-photographic developing process in which an electrode 36, Fig.3, is placed near a layer 34 carrying an electrostatic image and a voltage is applied to the electrode, the density of the developed image is controlled by changing the voltage impressed upon the electrode during development, thereby varying the difference between the electrode voltage and the voltage of the layer with the lapse of time. The electrode 36 is spaced from layer 34 by a spacer 35 within a tank 31 containing liquid developer 32 and comprising charged or chargeable toner particles in an insulating liquid. A D.C. source 37 applies a voltage between the electrode 36 and a plate 33. The gradation in development between portions of the layer at different potentials is controlled by varying the voltage applied to the electrode. In other embodiments to Figs.6 and 7 (not shown) a surface to be developed is moved past separate development electrodes maintained at required voltages.
