1385966 Developing electrostatic latent images XEROX CORP 29 Feb 1972 [4 March 1971] 9320/72 Heading G2H An electrostatic latent image on a photoconductive surface 10 is developed by toner particles presented to it by an endless donor member 24, consisting of a dielectric body 36, an apertured or mesh electrode 38 which overlies the dielectric body and may itself be covered by a dielectric film, and an electrode 40, or array of electrodes, beneath the dielectric body, together with means by which a potential can be established between the electrodes 38 and 40 and subjected to temporary reversals. The toner particles are held to the surface of the donor member by fields which extend through the surface, and attract the particles. Loss of effectiveness of these fields, brought about by the build up of electrostatic charges between the dielectric layers or between the body 36 and the air, is prevented by reversal of the potential in question over successive parts of the donor surface, e.g. by a commutator composed of segments 30 and 32. Alternatively the electrode 38 may be made up of mutually-insulated sections connected to a commutator, and the electrode 40 may be continuous, and connected to earth, or the electrodes 38 and 40 may both be made up of sections. When a donor member with a segmented electrode transfers toner at a development station C the potential between the relevant portions of the electrodes 38 and 40 may be removed to assist toner transfer. Preferably the donor member is a rotating cylinder, but it may be an endless belt or a moving flat plate.
