Abstract
1401259 Low expansion Ni-Fe alloys INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 3 May 1974 [4 May 1973] 21187/73 Heading C7A A shaped casting having when age hardened a thermal expansion coefficient between 20 and 300‹C of less than 5 x 10<SP>-6</SP>/‹C and a 0À2% proof stress at 20‹C greater than 350 N/mm<SP>2</SP>, made from an alloy comprising:- Fe and impurities balance such that % Ni + 0À7 (% Co) - 1À25 [% Ti + 0À35 (%Nb)] - 2 (% Ti) / (% Ti + % Nb) = 37 to 39. The total titanium content of the alloy may be 1 to 4À4% and the alloy may be investment cast in air, vacuum or inert atmosphere at 1,500‹C and either aged for 1-24 hours at 550 to 700‹C or if the casting is of large section slow cooled through the age hardening temperature range. The alloy may be used for parts of rotating and reciprocating machinery e.g. turbine blades and shafts, marine diesel piston crowns or die materials for aluminium casting.
