Abstract

129,347. Paterson, A. D. Jan: 12, 1917. Spray carburettors; vaporizers, external. - A combined jet and surface carburettor comprises one or more fuel nozzles and air and fuel mixing elements, a refractory body traversed by the mixture, and means for controlling the flow of the mixture before entering and after leaving the refractory body. In the form .shown, the carburettor has fuel nozzles 32, 33, 34, Venturi tubes 10, 11, 12, and a rotary disk valve 43 which uncovers the tubes 10, 11, 12 in turn. The valve 43 is connected by a stem 46 to the throttle 15, and between the valves 43, 15 is an absorbent refractory body 13 with longitudinal passages 23<a> traversed by the mixture. The body 13 is enclosed by the annular extension 22 of an exhaust chamber 17, which chamber and extension have a partition 21, so that exhaust entering at 16 passes up one half of the passage 22 and down the other half. The air supply to the carburettor is heated in a casing 19 surrounding the exhaust chamber 17, and around the part 22 is an annular superheating-chamber 29, into which depends a tubular control device 14 carried by the throttle 15. When the throttle is wholly or partly closed, the fuel mixtures passes wholly or partly through the superheating-chamber 29 and the control device 14 on its way to the outlet 41, as described in Specification 120,739.
