Abstract

160,256. Hodges, E. G. Dec. 15, 1919. Spray carburettors.- A butterfly-valve controlled by an external governor is employed for supplying auxiliary air to the engine side of a butterfly mixture valve. The governor may be arranged simultaneously to control butterfly - valves for main and auxiliary air, and also for mixture if desired. Further, an additional governor-controlled auxiliary - air valve may be used to limit the maximum speed. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the main air passage 3, controlled by a spaced butterfly - valve 14, leads through a Venturi tube 6 to a mixing-chamber, the outlet from which is controlled by a butterfly throttle valve 12. The auxiliary air-passage controlled by a butterfly-valve 15 leads to a space 11 surrounding the mixing-chamber, the air being supplied in an annular stream on the engine side of the throttle valve 12. The air valves 14, 15 are connected together by a link 18 and to a governor 21 by a link 19, the arrangement being such that the valve 14 moves more quickly than the valve 15. The arm 12<1> of the throttle valve mav be connected either to a rod 13 for hand actuation, or, as shown in chain lines, to the, governor, which then tends to close the throttle and open the airvalves when the speed rises and vice versa. The pipe 8 supplying the fuel nozzle 5 may be coiled within the exhaust pipe 9. In a modification, Fig. 5, an additional auxiliary-air valve 38 is opened by a governor 39 to thin the mixture when nearing the maximum speed. In a further modification, the auxiliary-air valve and mixture valve only are connected to the governor so that, as one is opened, the other is closed.
