Abstract
170,910. Sheppard, W. H. July 20, 1920. Fluid-actuated valves.-For controlling the richness of the combustible charge in accordance with the engine speed, the suction produced in the air inlet to the carburettor is used to adjust a valve controlling this air inlet, and also a second valve controlling a secondary air inlet direct to the induction pipe of the engine, the one valve being opened while the other is closed. In the form shown, the air-pipe 1 leading to the carburettor is formed with inlets 2 controlled by a ring valve 3, and a second pipe 6 communicating with the pipe leading from the carburettor to the engine is formed with inlet 7 controlled by a valve 8, the valves 3, 8 having trunnions 9 connected bv a lever 10 fulcrumed at 11. An extension of the lever 10 is connected bv a link 14 to a lever 16 fulcrumed at 19 and connected by a rod 18 to a piston 21 operated in a cylinder 22, the ends of which communicate with pipes 23, 24 opening in opposite directions within the pipe 1. A spring 25 on the link 14 normally maintains the valve 3 open and the valve 8 closed as shown. When the engine speed increases above normal, the velocity of air in the pipe 1 causes a greater pressure in the pipe 24 than in the pipe 23, so that the piston 21 is moved downwards, thereby closing the valve 3 and opening the valve 8, through which air enters directly to the engine. The fulcrum 19 of the lever 16 is adjustable along the member 5 and engages an incline 30 on the lever 16 so as to provide hand adjustment of the valves 3, 8 for varying the speed or stopping the engine.
