Abstract

205,411. Rothery, H., and Rothery, J. S. Jan. 9, 1923. Spray carburettors.-A suction-actuated air flap 2 actuates the fuel needle valve 5 through a lever 11 which, in the form shown in Fig. 1, is pivoted to the flap and rests on a fulcrum 12 carried by an arm 13 of an adjustable bell-crank lever. The lift of the air flap'is limited by the main control device of the carburettor which, in Fig. 1, consists of a throttle plate 3 pivoted at 6 and actuated by a Bowden wire 7. The needle valve extends across the casing and has a collar against which the lever 11 presses, the arm 13 being actuated by a Bowden wire 14. The plate 3 is slotted for the passage of the needle 5 and is shaped to form a variable choke tube. The part of the casing containing the nozzle is raised and curved in such a manner that the flap 2 may rise some distance without opening the main air inlet, air then passing through ducts 19, 17, 18 to mix with the fuel that is admitted to the lifting of the needle valve. By adjusting the arm 13, the flap may open without lifting the needle valve, air only being then supplied. In a modification, the lever 11 may be pivoted to the arm 13 and contact with a projection on the air flap. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the needle valve. 5 is actuated from the air flap 2 by a lever 3, suspended by a link 15 from another lever adjustable by a Bowden wire 16. The lift of the flap is regulated by an arm 20 actuated by the main control wire 7.
