Abstract

136,962. Bell, P. A. G. Feb. 24, 1919. Spray carburettors. - A carburettor of the kind in which the nozzle opens into the throat of a Venturi tube is provided with one or more by-passes between the entrance of the tube and the throat thereof, through which, as the speed of the engine increases, a corresponding increasing quantity of air passes, in addition to the air which passes directly through the tube. In the form shown, the by-passes are formed by apertures c' at the entrance of the tube, the annular chamber c between the Venturi tube a and the casing b, and apertures c<2> at the throat of the tube. One or more auxiliary nozzles may be disposed in the chamber c, preferably adjacent to the apertures c<1>. The apertures c<1> may be controlled by a valve, for example a rotary hit-and-miss valve. A suction-actuated secondary air valve h may be provided. A valve n provided with an irregular edge n<1> and working in a perforated sleeve p may be provided to control the outlet of mixture through openings n<2> to the induction pipe m. The valve n is operated by a lever o and, in the shutoff position, admits air to the induction pipe through apertures p<1> for braking or cooling purposes.
