Abstract

1,183,819. Cable termination. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 22 Sept., 1967 [23 Sept., 1966], No. 42560/66. Heading H2E. Sodium cable 2 is terminated by forcing copper ferrule 1 into one end of the cable between conductor 3 and rubber or plastics covering 4 until flange 5 abuts the end of covering 4, and copper sleeve 7 placed over the end of the cable is compressed so that the covering 4 grips the ferrule throughout its circumference. End 6 of the ferrule is flared and chamfered for ease of insertion and to prevent cutting into covering 4 and displaced sodium fills the remainder of the bore of the ferrule. Cap 8, of e.g. brass or gun metal is screwed on to the protruding part of the ferrule and is integral with rod, eye or spade terminal 9. The ferrule, sleeve and terminal may be integral, with a sealable bore to permit escape of air displaced by the sodium (Fig. 2, not shown). In other alternative constructions (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) compression of covering 4 is by means of a threaded gland nut. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,147,039.
