Abstract

1,147,039. Cable termination. BURNDY CORP. 25 Nov., 1966 [1 Dec., 1965], No. 52937/66. Heading H2E. Electrical connector 10 for the end of cable 12 having a core of sodium or like highly ductile metal comprises a cap 18 fitting over the insulating jacket 14 of the cable and a contact member 20 which as shown is corkscrew shaped and, over a major proportion of its axial length, has its periphery in contact with the inner surface of the jacket so as to support it when the cap 18 is crimped or otherwise clamped to the jacket. The shape of contact member 20 is such as to provide a high ratio between the volume it encloses and its actual volume. The contact member may have a sharp edge which bites into the insulation as it is screwed in. Metal displaced during this operation is received in enclosure 28, a shoulder 26 on the cap 18 spacing the cable from its rear surface. Cap 18 is preferably of conductive material to shield the contact member. The contact member may alternatively be a thin hollow tube whose outer diameter is substantially the same as the inner diameter of the cable insulation (Fig. 2, not shown) or a helical screw (Fig. 3, not shown). A pair of sodium cables may be joined using a double ended connector.
