Limbs, artificial. - An elbow joint comprises an upper member a, Fig. 1, adapted to be secured by a screw o and nut b or otherwise to the socket piece carried by the stump of the arm and having a pair of spaced lugs c with holes to receive a pivot pin d, a disk e with a number of holes or depressions f and secured to the pin d between the lugs, a stem member g secured to the disk and adapted to carry the forearm or other appliances or fitments, and a locking-pin h acted upon by a spring i to engage in one of the holes f and having a cranked stem j i slidable in a central hole l and a slot in the member a and connected to a cord k whereby it may be controlled by the shoulder or chest of the wearer; the cranked part of the stem j may be engaged in a recess n in the slot to keep the joint unlocked, and is operable by the other hand. The forearm member g may be moved relatively to the member a by hand or by a cord p operated by the stump, the shoulder, or the chest, and connected to a threaded wheel l secured to or formed on the pin d. The cord p may, alternatively, be connected to a lug on the member g, or to a lever u, Fig. 3, on the pin d to which the lever is adjustably secured by a setscrew w engaging one of a number of recesses x in the pin, the cord preferably engaging in a groove a<1> in the end of the lever and being secured through a hole u<2> therein. A lever u may be scoured to each end of the pin d, and a cross-bar, to which the cord may be secured, may connect the ends of the levers. A pin r on the disk e cooperates with a pin s passing through the lugs to limit the downward movement of the forearm. The nut b is used to adjust the position of the member a with respect to the socket-piece which carries it, or a spring-pressed pin, similar to the pin h, may be provided on one part to engage holes in a plate on the other part for this purpose.
