Abstract

195,751. McKay, P. M. Jan. 8, 1922. Limbs, artificial.-An artificial hand has two relatively movable opposed grippers with a ratchet mechanism for rapidly adjusting .the span, locking the grippers, and applying a final gripping pressure. A stationary gripper 14 is mounted on the bucket (not shown) and carries a rotatable sleeve 15 to which is pivoted a movable gripper 25. A ratchet 22 is fixed to the sleeve and co-operates with a spring pressed detent 23 hinged to a lever 33, which latter is pivoted on a pin 32 within the gripper. The lever 33 is controlled in one direction by a spring 37 and in the other bv a cord which controls the detent 23 and is actuated from body harness. In operation. if tension on the cord 38 is slightly relaxed, although the lever 33 and the detent are held to the right of the position shown, the gripper 25 will be moved by the spring 37 to close on an object. If the tension is wholly relaxed, the detent engages the ratchet, thus locking the gripper 25, and the lever 33 is moved anticlockwise about the pin 32 by the spring 37 to impart a final gripping pressure. The gripper 14 can have two fingers, or one only, or can have additional detachable fingers, and is connected to a notched tongue 6 pivoted in lugs 4, 5 and held locked by a spring latch 8. The lugs 4, 5 terminate in a grooved end 2, 3 engaging the bucket. The gripper 25, which constitutes the thumb, rotates round an axis lying lengthways of the hand and is locked in position by a spring pressed pin 28 engaging holes 26 in the gripper 14. Specifications 100,054, 109,412, and 120,302 are referred to.
