Abstract

133,344. Troendle, H. Aug. 9, 1917. Limbs, artificial.-An elbow-joint for artificial arms of the kind described in Specification 115,753 is provided with mechanism for bending the arm and turning the hand, and means for locking the arm against bending and the hand against turning, separately or simultaneously. The mechanism is operated from a cap 69d, Fig. 4, on the sound shoulder through cords 69b and a pulley 69a, lever, or the like. The pulley is mounted on a sleeve 69, Fig. 1, turning on the elbow-joint pivot 68 and carrying a bevel-wheel 70 to which is fixed a toothed wheel 71. The hand is turned by a spindle 73 carrying a bevel-wheel 72 gearing with the bevel-wheel 70. The upper arm carries a toothed segment 67, and a pinion 76, mounted loosely on its axle on the forearm, can be slid into engagement with either the toothed segment 67 or the toothed wheel 71, or with both. The pinion 76 can be locked against rotation by a tooth 78 on a sliding rod 79 operated by a cam 82 pivoted to its lower end and working between pins 84, 85 carried by the guide-tube 80. The pinion 76 is slid into the desired position by a member mounted on a slide pivoted to a crank on the guide-tube 80, which can be turned by the handle of the cam 82.
