Abstract

114,007. Hobbs, E. W. March 9, 1917. Limbs, artificial.-The wrist-rotating mechanism of an arm is actuated directly by a cord and is provided with means whereby the wrist may be locked in position when desired. In the form shown, a cylindrical extension B<1> is mounted on the forearm member B and supports rotatably a ring C, Figs 1 and 3, and a cylindrical mounting E for an artificial hand &c. The ring C carries a projection fitted with a roller or sheave C<2> and is notched at C<1> so that it may be held against rotation by a projection F<3> on a bolt F carried by a guide F<1> within the extension B<1>. A cord D attached to the upper arm band A and passing round the elbow so as to be put under tension when the arm is bent is attached at the other end to the mounting E and is so arranged that the roller C<2> lies in a bight in the cord. Tension on the cord D will rotate the part E against the action of a spring E <2>. When it is desired to lock the wrist, the bolt F is moved backwards so as to be disengaged from the notch C<1>, so freeing the ring C and roller E<2>, and to engage one of a series of notches in a ring E<3>, Figs. 1 and 2, fixed to the mounting E. Tension on the cord will now merely rotate the ring C. The projection F<3> on the bolt is connected thereto by a spring F<6> so that, if the bolt on being moved backwards is not in position to engage one of the notches in the ring E<3>, it will be moved by the spring into engagement with a notch on slight rotary movement of the wrist. In modifications, the cord D may be operated by any ordinary body-harness and the ring C may be arranged otherwise than in the manner shown so long as it provides a point of resistance for the bight of the cord D which may be released when the wrist is locked.
