Abstract

562,204. Valves. WELLMAN SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION, Ltd., and SMITH, C. H. Dec. 14, 1942, Nos. 17755/42 and 6004/43. [Class 135] A butterfly valve is actuated through gearing arranged so that the flow through the valve increases uniformly with the angular movement of the hand wheel or the like over the whole range of opening movement of the valve member. The Figure shows the invention applied to a valve device actuated alternatively by a hand wheel 6 or by a remotely controlled power device 30. The circular valve member 3 is mounted on a spindle 3<1> carrying an arm 12 connected by a link 13 with a pivot or arm on a gear-wheel 8. The wheel 8 meshes with a smaller wheel 7 loosely mounted on the shaft 3' and rigidly secured to a hand wheel 6. The valve is held in its adjusted position by a friction grip comprising a flange 17 on the hollow boss of the wheel and pressed, by a spring 24, against a plate 29 secured to the casing. When it is desired to make the power device 30 operative, a knob 20 is pressed to the right to release the tension of the spring 24 and to move a blade 19 to couple the flange 17 with a member 19a mounted on a lay shaft 9b. A chain 33 maintained under tension by a spring- loaded lever 37 passes round a toothed wheel 35 on the lay shaft and a toothed wheel 32 loosely mounted on a spindle 31. This spindle is attached to a diaphragm in the casing 30 and is held against rotation by a bracket 39 fixed to the spindle engaging a rib on the casing. The knob 20 and a plate 26 secured to the wheel 8 are provided with pointers co-operating with fixed scales. In a modification, actuated solely by hand, the gear-wheels are arranged at the opposed side of the casing to that on which the arms and link are situated. In place of the connection described above, chain or cam gear may be utilized.
