(5. SIREN CONTROL MECHANISM FOR GAS LAMPS.
APPLICATION FILED .IUNE 13| 1917.

GUSTAF SIREN, OF DONORA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONTROL MECHANISM FOR GAS-LAMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 7, 1919.
Application led J'uneil, 1917. Serial No. 174,510.
To all 'wlwm z'v' may concern.' Be it known that I, GUSTAF SIREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Donora,
in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Control Mechanism for Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in control me-chanism for gas lamps. One object is to provide manually operable means for controlling the supply of gas to the light to regulate the intensity of the light. A
further object is to provide means for readily lighting the lights without inconvenience, gas control means being placed within easy reach regardless of the position of the gas lamp. A further object is to provide means for economizing gas in the operation of gas lamps. TvVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the drawing which forms a part of this specification.
In the accompanying` drawing which is a side view of my improved control mechanisrn illustrating its application the numeral 1 denotes a gas lamp having the gas supply pipe 2 provided with a cut off valve 3 which is controlled by the stem A to which a pulley 5 is made fast. A chainV 6 runs about the said pulley and has its ends secured to the Y ends of a pair of bell cranks 7, 8 fulcrumed upon a pin 9, the opposite ends of said bell cranks being engaged, respectively, by steel wires 10, 11 which are also secured, respectively, to other bell cranks 12, 13 fulcrumed upon a pin 14, said bell cranks last mentioned'being connected by steel wires 15, 16, respectively, with a turnbuckle 17 and chain 18 which chain passes about a sheave 19, having a turning handle 20, nd then connects with the said turnbuckle. The said sheave' 19 is journaled in a bracket 21 suitably supported. A set screw 19a carried by the said sheave 19 extends beyond the periphery of the same for` engagement with one or the other of the stop pins 19b carried by the Lbracket, 21 and disposed in the path of movement of the said set screw in such position as to limit the movement of the said sheave 19 to substantially one-quarter turn which is sufficient to vregulate the flow of gas to the lamp. A small gas pipe 23 communieating with the pipe 2 supplies gas continually to the pilot light 2L-which lights the y lamp 1 the instant the gas is turned on in said lamp. e
By means of the handle 2O of sheave 19 the bell cranks 12, 8 or 18, 7 may be moved upon their fulcrunis to rotate the pulley 5 in one or the other direction toV open or close the valve V3, partially or completely, to positively regulate the How of gas through the pipe 2 to the lamp l to regula-te the intensity of the light within said lamp. It is obvious that through the use of a device constructed along the lines of my resent invention a very fine adjustment oft e iiow of gas to the lamp 1 is possible.
Vhat is claimed is A control mechanism for gas lamps including in combination with a gas valve,
valve, a flexible lconnection having its central portion engaged about said pulley, a Y
pair of bell crank levers each having one arm thereof connected to one end of said flexible connection, a bracket, a second pair of bell crank lever connections between the pairs of bell crank levers and the bracket, a sheave rotatable in said bracket, ahandle for` rotating said sheave, a stop on said sheave, a pair of stops on 'said bracket in the path of the sheave stop for limiting the rotary movementthereof in both directions, and a second flexible connectionY having its central part engaged aboutsaid sheave and having its free ends connected to armsV of said last named `pair of bell crank levers, one of said branches of said flexible connection including an adjusting device. V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ymy ownI have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patentsl Washington, D. 0.
