Abstract

126,457. Hobbs, E. W. May 8, 1918. Limbs, artificial.-A hand. having connected fingers pivoted to move as one and the thumb separately pivoted so that the thumb and fingers may move to and from each other, is opened and closed by reverse movements of a guided pin or its equivalent engaging a pivoted cam-lever with a cam-slot or edge which, through connexions, causes movement of tail-pieces on the fingers and thumb. The fingers B are pivoted at A' and the thumb C at A<2> to a hand A. Tail-pieces B<1>, C' on the fingers and thumb are connected by a pin and cam slot B<2>. C<2>. A cam-lever D pivoted to the wrist-plate F at D<2> carries a pin D' engaging a slot B<3> in the tail-piece B', while a cam-slot D<3> in the lever D is engaged by a pin H on a crosshead G sliding on guides E. Rocking of the arm D causes opening and closing of the hand and is effected by sliding of the pin H. A closing cord I, which may be a Bowden wire, is attached directly to the cross-head G, while an opening cord J is also attached to the cross-head after passing over a pulley K on the latter. If the hand is made self-closing, a helical spring is attached at one end to the pin B<2> and at the other end to an eye M in the wrist-plate. The cam-slot C<2> is so shaped as to obtain a slow closing movement and a powerful grip which is self-locking when a small object is grasped.
