Abstract

Limbs, artificial.-In artificial hands in which the fingers are pivoted to the body portion of the hand, a yoke or frame is mounted to turn about the pivotal axis of the fingers and engage projections, which may be adjustable, upon them when operated by a cord, the fingers being held in their normal closed positions by springs connected to them and although opened by the cord may yet move independently relatively to one another so as to adapt themselves to the shape of the article being gripped. The first finger is preferably connected to the thumb by a link so that they act together and the grip of the fingers may be maintained independently of the springs by a second control cord connected to the thumb and forefinger by an additional link. The actuating- yoke which rocks on the pin d is shown at p, the stops against which it takes at q. It is operated by a chain n from the lever k, which is pivoted at l and is raised by the cord m connected to shoulder harness &c. The fingers are closed by separate springs f. The thumb is connected to the first finger by the link j. The second control cord r is connected to the lever s jointed to the thumb and connected to a return spring t. A hook u is secured to the body portion of the hand. In a modification, the main control is connected to the knuckle of the thumb and the other fingers attached by cords to a stirrup common to them all and having a single return spring, the simultaneous opening being affected by the yoke as before.
