Abstract

112,846. Cauet, P. A. Feb. 27, 1917. Limbs, artificial.-A hand comprises a casing 1 to which a rigid thumb 2 and fingers 3 are pivoted and held in the closed position by springs 8. The fingers are coupled by means of wires 9 having ball-ends 10 to a plate 11 oscillating about trunnions 12 under the action of a cable g preferably guided in a sheath g<x> of the Bowden type. The finger couplings, having end play, allow the fingers to close to different angles when the cable is relaxed. The thumb is coupled to the plate 11 by means of a rod 13 so as to be actuated simultaneously with the fingers and end play is prevented by means of a cap 16 fixed over the ballend 15. A cain 17 pivoted at 18 may be caused to bear against the plate 11 or ball-ends 10 to keep the fingers rigid in any gripping position. The cam is operated by a rod 19 carrying a set-screw 21 passing through a slot 23 in the hand and adapted when tightened to bring corrugated surfaces on the rod 19 and on the hand into gripping contact.
