Abstract

559,494. Artificial arms. BLATCHFORD, W. A. Sept. 2, 1942, No. 12372. [Class 81 (ii)] An artificial arm in which the elbow joint is provided with means to control the movement of the forearm through an appendage, is characterised in that means are also provided whereby a gripping appliance, or fingers and thumb of a hand member, may be actuated by the same appendage when the forearm is in a locked position. The upper arm bucket 1 is provided with spaced lugs 4 carrying a transverse shaft 5 on which is freely mounted a quadrant 6 positioned between the spaced limbs 7 of the forearm carrying member 8 also freely pivoted on the shaft 5. The quadrant 6 has a grooved periphery in which operates an appendage 9 to turn the same on the movement of the shoulders or body of the wearer. The limb 7 of the member 8 is formed with slots 12 each of which may be engaged selectively by a spring- pressed locking lever 11 controlled by a pivoted lever 14. A link 19 connects the quadrant 6 with a plunger 18 which, in turn, operates a plunger 21, extending centrally through the gripping fitment 23, and bearing on a pivoted lever 38 integral with one jaw 36 of the gripping members. The gripping fitment is held in the fore-arm 24 by a spring pressed lever 31 which engages in a groove 32. Spring-pressed balls 33 may lock the gripping fitment in adjusted angular position in the fore-arm. A rubber band 40 pulls the gripping jaws 36, 37 together. In modification, an arcuate member carried by one limb of the member 8, is apertured near its periphery so that a spring- pressed bolt may engage selectively one of the apertures, to lock the member 8 in its adjusted position. The bolt is withdrawn by a rotatable member-bearing against an arm on the bolt. In a further modification, the quadrant 6 is formed with a cam surface which bears against a pivoted lever contacting the end of the plunger 18. In a still further modification, the fore-arm is of full length and is attached to the carrying member 8, the plunger 18 contacting a long spring-urged plunger which, in turn, moves the gripping jaws &c.
