618,904. Knee and elbow joints. PARKWOOD (ARTIFICIAL COMPONENTS) Ltd., and GODDARD, H. F. Oct. 28, 1946, Nos. 31905/46 and 18330/47. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] In angularly adjustable joints wherein a sliding sp ing-p.essed bolt on one member engages notches or teeth on the other member to hold the joint in adjusted position and in which the joint can be released by a pull on a control member whereby the bolt is withdrawn and can be held in retracted position by a detent and subsequently restored to locking position by a further pull on the control member, the arrangement is such that the detent directly engages the bolt and the control member carries the @unting means for releasing the detent. As applied to a joint for elbows or knees of artificial limbs a tooth 19 on a pivoted control lever 21, harness-operated, engages a pin 18 on a bolt 9. If the bolt is sufficiently withdrawn a detent 29, actuated by a spring 32, can engage a notch 31 on the bolt. A slot 36 permits longitudinal movement of the detent on its pivot 22, under the pull of the bolt springs 15 when traction on the harness ceases, and a pin 35 on the detent is thereby brought into range of a tooth 34 on the control lever, subsequent actuation of which throws out the detent to free the bolt. A modified construction is described wherein the bolt slides in a direction parallel to the joint pivot axis, the mechanism being carried in a rotatable hemispherical cup 49, Fig. 6, on an upper arm stump fitting, an additional harness cord 78 being provided for lifting the forearm.
