624,370. Artificial limbs. STEEPER, Ltd., H., and SAMSON, S. T. J. Sept. 3, 1946, No. 26430. [Class 81(ii)] An artificial limb comprises upper and lower limb members connected by a spindle carrying an apertured quadrant or the like, a locking bolt mounted parallel to the spindle and adapted to be moved by spring means into locking engagement with the quadrant, and means to disengage the locking bolt which means are adapted to be actuated both by hand or by appendage from other part of the body. In an artificial arm the locking means is operated by a pull on appendage 27 acting on lever 28, link 29, and spring restrained pawl 30 to engage ratchet sleeve 32, whereof the other end acts as a cam surface for projecting arm 11 of spring pressed locking bolt 7 which is slidable in fixed shaft 8 thus permitting it to engage or restraining it from engaging fixed apertured plate 10 carried by upper arm 3 and apertured quadrant 5 mounted on spindle 1 whereon forearm 4 is carried. Apart from the appendage 27 the locking bolt 7 may also be drawn out of engagement with quadrant 5 by the engagement of projecting arm 11 by spring-restrained flanged sleeve 13 slidable on spindle 1, as a result of a pull on chain 19 from rod 16 by pin 24 which runs on cam sleeve 15 turned by hand by knob 14 on forearm 4. Alternatively the cam sleeve 15 may be replaced by a spring- controlled lever fulcrumed in the forearm bucket 4. The locking quadrant 5 may have a buffer to limit forearm movement. Both cam surfaces are formed so that the bolt may be fixed in the disengaged position.
