Abstract
574,196. Spades. CHALLIS, T. G., and HERRING,F. Jan. 13, 1944, No. 701. [Class 6(ii)] A tool for digging and inverting, soil comprises a long handle A to which is pivoted at b<2> a frame B, the digging blade G being pivoted at b' to the free end of the frame and being connected by a chain to a rod H on the handle, the chain limiting the movements of the blade when the frame is tilted' by a pedal lever c. In use the blade is driven into the ground by foot pressure on the frame, and the foot is then transferred to a button f<5> to release a spring-controlled catch f<1> holding the frame in line with the handle. Pedal lever c, which forms an extension of the frame, is then depressed and the frame thereby raised until a latch N on the frame engages and is moved by a pin n<2> on the handle. This releases the blade which then rocks about its pivots to discharge its load. A stop plate D limits the penetration of the blade into the ground.
