Abstract

809,824. Hand digging tools. BULLOCK, A. S. June 7, 1956 [March 9, 1955 ; Dec. 29, 1955], Nos. 6872/55 and 37189/55. Class 6(2). A digging implement as shown in Fig. .10, comprises a channelsectioned shank E having a blade H secured to its lower end and a handle A connected tc its upper end, by means of a resilient member which allows controlled displacement of the handle relative to the shank. The blade H is mounted on a stub shank M pivotally con nected at N to a sup porting member J which is in turn pivotally connected to the shank E at F. A metal tongue P fixed to the stub shank M protrudes through a slot in the shank E and passes over a roller Q which bridges the end of the shank. In operation, the blade H is inserted in the ground until the support J rests on the ground the handle A is pulled towards the operator, thereby flexing the resilient member between the handle and the shank E, whereupon a further pull on the handle A causes the soil in front of the blade to break and the shank E, under the influence of the resilient member, resumes its normal position with respect to the handle A, thereby making the roller Q press against the tongue P and causing the stub shank M and the blade H to swing forward and thus discharge and invert the soil on the blade. The construction of the tool may be simplified as shown in Fig. 2, by securing the blade directly to the shank E.
