Abstract

632,621. Reachers. JENKS, L., and VINER, H. S. G. Jan. 19, 1948, No. 1640. [Class 61 (ii)] A long arm device particularly for reaching goods on shelves comprises a pair of relatively movable jaws mounted on a rotatable head at one end of a long arm and means for closing the jaws operated by handles at the other end of the arm. The head 2 to which the jaws 7 are pivoted at 8 and which are urged apart by flat springs 9, is integral with a sleeve 6 rotatable on the long arm 1, the jaws being closed by a pull on a rod attached to the chain 13 which extends through the bent part of the arm and terminates in a ball or stud 15 rotatable in a cup 16 on an element 17 connected to the jaws by links 18. The operating means comprise a fixed handle and a pivoted handle to which one end of a toggle lever is pivoted, the other end sliding in the fixed handle. The rod is connected to an intermediate point on the toggle lever. In a modification, the arm 1 is straight and the chain 13 is omitted, the rod being directly connected to the stud 15. In a further modification, one jaw is fixed and the other pivoted to the head. Resilient gripping faces may be provided on the jaws.
