Abstract
584,882. Coal tongs. SKINNER, B. J. Feb. 1, 1945, No. 2517. [Class 61 (ii)] The body portion of a pair of coal tongs consists of a sleeve 1, to the lower end of which is secured a link 2, to which two gripper arms 4 are pivoted at 5. At the upper end of the sleeve 1 is secured a finger handle 7 and passing through the sleeve 1 is a rod 9 forming a plunger. A plate 10 is secured to the lower end of the rod 9, provided with two holes through which pass the gripper arms 4. The upper end of the rod 9 is provided with a handle 12. A spring is provided around the rod 9 and within the sleeve 1 so that it bears against the link 2 at one end and against a collar welded to the rod 9 at the other. A releasable catch in the form of a rod 15 which coacts with a groove in the rod 9 ensures that the device does not remain in fully extended position when not in use. An alternative form of catch is described in which a latch is pivoted to the handle 7 and engages in a slot in the handle 12. In a modification, a device having three grippers is described, and a small shovel or similar implement may replace any one of the grippers.
