Abstract
643,047. Gripping and picking-up tools. THORNE, J. Dec. 19, 1947, No. 33535. [Classes 61(i) and 61(ii)] A device for gripping and picking up articles, particularly for use by disabled persons comprises a pair of jaws consisting of a bowed, spring steel blade 2 and a rigid plate 1 normally closed together at their lower ends and having their upper ends fixed to a distance piece 3 the blade 2 having anchored thereto an operating member for opening the jaws. The jaw 1 carries a spring clip 8 for attaching the device at an angle to a walking stick 9. The operating member comprises a flexible member 11 operated by a ring or trigger on the handle of the walking stick. The jaws are lined with rubber strips, metallic contact being: made at the extreme tip. In a modification, the distance piece 3 and/or the rigid jaw is extended to form a long arm having a transverse handle, a pair of such devices being used in the right and left hands. In another modification, the end of the rigid jaw comprises a shoe horn. The device may be used for holding a duster.
