Abstract

123,814. Blatchford, C. A. March 5, 1918. Walking-sticks, securing to wrist.-A walking- stick or the like is connected to a gauntlet member secured to the arm to form a short crutch for the assistance of weak or deformed arms and hands. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a stout leather or other trough a is secured to the forearm by straps b. Formed in one with the trough is a wooden or other block c to which is secured a stick c. An extension of the gauntlet may support the hand if desired. In the form shown in Fig. 2 for use with a weak elbow-joint, the upper arm and fore-arm are both provided with gauntlets f, a having rigid side-members g which pivot together at the elbow. A quadrant h is secured to the outside joint and a control chain i attached to the quadrant is connected to body harness by which the arm may be flexed. Locking means, as shown in Fig. 4, may be fitted to the inside joint, a rigid side member g being provided with notches l into any of which a spring stop k takes. Further modifications suitable for cases of weak wrists or hands, show walking-sticks with handles to which a gauntlet is attached by rigid straps, and in some cases a thumb piece is secured to the handle. Specification 105,975, [Class 81 (ii), Medical &c. appliances], is referred to.
