Abstract
The manipulator for the disabled consists of the fixed part (1), fastening tapes (2), sliding arm (4), movable wrist (5) and fastening handle (6) with the reservation that to the handle (6) it is possible to fasten tools and instruments of everyday use. The movable arm (4) may be pulled out to increase the reach of work of the instruments and tools, fastened in the handle, and protect uncovered parts of body. The movable handle (6) makes it possible to adjust the fastened tools and instruments in the lower surface facilitating effective use of working muscles of the arm and forearm.
Description
Manipulator for the disabled
The subject of the invention includes the manipulator for disabled people, with paresis or dysfunction of one or both upper limbs.
The problem of applying devices of everyday home use is particularly significant for physically handicapped people i.e. with dysfunctions of motor organs, mainly upper limbs i.e. hand and palm. Adaptation of devices to the disabled makes it easier to function independently in everyday life. Therefore, the need to help by third parties may be considerably reduced.
In technology there are known prostheses imitating construction of human upper limb. They encounter numerous motor problems connected with the difficulty to reconstruct motor of such a complex organ as human palm or arm.
The aim of the invention is to prepare a manipulator enabling simple connection of such devices as toothbrush, screwdriver, drill, soldering iron, knife etc. in such a way so that it will be possible to use them even despite partial dysfunction of a motor organ. The connection includes a special replaceable fastening handle dedicated to a concrete model of the device.
The manipulator for the disabled according to the invention includes a fixed part fastened by means of elastic tapes for a forearm, movable arm, pulled out from the fixed part, and movable wrist to which a fastening handle is fixed. The fixed part is covered, in place of adherence to the forearm, with a soft material, favourably with neoprene foam. Movement of the arm in regard to the fixed part is determined with location of a setting knob (fastened to the arm and moving in a longitudinal groove made in the fixed part of the manipulator). Protrusion of the arm and replaceable tips of the handle 6 make it possible to adapt a used instrument to the shape and size of a palm and forearm. Control of functions of the fastened device (turning on, turning off, change of rotations etc.) may be carried out by means of a remote control, EMG converter (Eng. Electromiography) fastened on casing of the used device (e.g. drill), using a signal of muscle tension in a healthy limb, or a cable pilot operated by a healthy limb. Movement of the fastening handle may be coordinated through the wrist with movements of
partially working palm as a result of its mechanical connection with the fastening handle e.g. elastic band.
The manipulator is fastened to the forearm, has the handle making it possible to fasten different tools. The device ensures easy replacement of tools. The described device has a positive influence on the policy of equal opportunities, making it possible for the disable to integrate in the society.
The manipulator for the disabled is presented in the example in the figure which shows the manipulator in view from the top. Example:
The manipulator for the disabled consists of the fixed part 1, fastened by means of elastic tapes 2 to the forearm, covered in place of adhesion with the forearm, with a soft material (favourably with neoprene foam 3), movable arm 4 pulled out from the fixed part 1 and from the movable wrist 5 to which the fastening handle 6 is fixed. Protrusion of the arm 4 and replaceable tips of the handle 6 make it possible to adapt a used instrument to the shape and size of a palm and forearm. Movement of the arm 4 in regard to the fixed part 1 is determined by location of a setting knob 7 (fastened to the arm and moving in a longitudinal groove made in the fixed part of the manipulator). Control of the fastened device may be carried out by means of a remote control, EMG converter (Eng. Electromiography) using a signal of muscle tension in a healthy limb, or a cable pilot operated by a healthy limb. Movements of the fastening handle 6 may be coordinated through the wrist 5 with movements of partially working palm.
Tips of the handle may be adapted to a series of types of applied devices e.g.: power tool, actuator systems of machines and devices, household appliances etc. Pulled out arm 4 enables free control of distance of fastening of the device in relation to the forearm. Therefore, it is possible to increase the reach of performed activity and to avoid danger of damage to not working palm during operation of the device. The wrist 5 enables obtainment of free location of the device in relation to the forearm and ipso facto optimal use of a part of muscles which have not been paralysed
through a change of the reference unit of the fastened device. This solution makes it possible to be used by people with different degree of motor handicap of upper limbs. In case of lack of the forearm, the device may be adapted and fastened to the arm.
Claims
1 . The manipulator for the disabled including the fixed part, fastening tapes and arm is characterised in that the arm 4 can be pulled out and connected by means of a movable wrist 5 with the fastening handle 6.
2. The manipulator for the disabled according to the claim 1 is characterised in that to the handle 6 it is possible to fasten tools and instruments of everyday use.
3. The manipulator for the disabled according to claim 1 or 2 is characterised in that the movable arm 4, while being pulled out, increases the reach of work of the instruments and tools, fastened in the handle, and protects uncovered parts of body.
4. The manipulator for the disabled according to claim 1 or 2 or 3 is characterised in that the movable handle 6 makes it possible to fasten tools and instruments in the lower surface facilitating effective use of working muscles of the arm and forearm.
