Abstract

416,341. Hinges. HANGER & CO., Ltd., J. E., and SMITH, T. BRYANT-, Roehampton House, Roehampton Lane, London. March 5, 1934, No. 6978. [Class 65 (ii).] Pivoting-adjustments.-In a kneejoint for artificial limbs comprising a bolt carrying a brake drum attached to the shin member and a bracket and brake band attached to the thigh, cam-controlled means are provided for adjusting the tension of the band on the drum as required by the user while the leg is in use. A drum d mounted on the kneebolt c is surrounded by a brake band e attached at one end to a bracket f and at the other to a sleeve g slidable on a bolt h. A second sleeve is formed with a cam surface k, which co-operates with a cam surface l on the sleeve g, and is rotated by a lever to tighten the band. The lever is rotated through a Bowden wire m operated by a button n having a tooth o, Fig. 5, normally pressed into engagement with a rack p by a spring q. A spring r effects the return of the lever. In a modification, Fig. 3, a wheel s mounted on the bolt h has a hub formed with a cam surface. The wheel projects through the thigh and is rotated by the thumb and finger. A spring pressed ball v engages recesses u in the wheel to retain it in position.
