Abstract

385,078. Joints for artificial limbs. STEEPER, H., Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton Lane, and HOARE, D. C., 5, Kenwyn Road, Clapham, both in London. Nov. 14, 1931, No. 31581. [Class 81 (ii).] An elbow or knee joint comprises a ring 8, rotatably mounted or fixed in the member 9 of the arm or leg, and having three depending arms 10, 11, 12, extending over about one half of its circumference and preferably connected by a web 13, the outer arms 11, 12 having bearings for a shaft 14 carrying the other limb member 38, the centre arm 10 being formed as a box-like structure 15 extending across the ring and having a slot 16 at its base, a post 17 secured to the top of this box carrying a spring-controlled pivoted lever 18 connected at one end with the actuating means 37, a tube 22 projecting from the top of the box containing a spring-controlled rod 24 which projects inside the box to act in conjunction with a holed quadrant 25 secured to the shaft 14, a pin 26 on the rod which moves in a slot of the tube and carries a roller 27 riding against a multiple-faced cam 29 mounted on the side of the box, a ratchet wheel 32 secured to the cam, and a rocking lever 30, pivoted to the lever 18 and controlled by a spring connected to the latter, the nose end 31 of said lever 30 coacting with the ratchet wheel. A rubber buffer 15a within the slot 16 engages a projection 25b of the quadrant 25 to act as a stop on the shaft 14. When the lever 18 is pulled upwards, the ratchet wheel and cam are revolved by the lever 30, a cam face 29a acting to lift the rod 24 free of the quadrant 25, when the lower limb member 38 can be bent as desired. A further pull on the lever 18 causes the roller 27 to ride down the cam face 29c and the rod 24 engages a hole 25a of the quadrant.
