Abstract

672,916. Artificial limbs. HANGER & CO., Ltd., J. E., and BROWN, P. March 8, 1950 [May 2, 1949], No. 11704/49. Class 81 (ii). A knee joint for an artificial leg, having a band brake or similar device to control its movement, has the braking device mounted in one leg portion and operatively connected to the other portion of the leg through a system of links or levers. In the form described, the brake device is mounted in the shin member and incorporates a free wheel h secured to a spindle g, and set in a brake drum j, around which passes a stationary brake band q, adjustable by a hand wheel p. The spindle g carries a lever d<SP>1</SP> which is connected through a link e to a pivot d on the thigh member. Thus relative movement between the two parts of the leg is communicated to the brake device, while the free wheel permits straightening of the leg but not bending. The link e is guided through a block m which also acts as a stop for a resilient buffer n, thereby serving as a back check.
