Abstract

628,958. Artificial limbs. VALENTI, M. C. Jan. 30, 1946, Nos. 3026 and 3027. Convention dates, Feb. 7, 1945 and Dec. 31, 1945. [Class 81 (ii)] An artificial foot 2, Fig. 1, is articulated at 7 to the casing 6 attached to the patient's leg, and movement of the joint is controlled by a friction brake 8 and a spring-loaded piston 15 which are connected in series between the foot and the casing. Alternatively, as shown in Fig 5, the friction brake 8<SP>1</SP> may be incorporated in the bearing on which the foot is pivoted, and the piston connected between it and the foot. The friction brake comprises discs mounted on the axle, the friction between which can be varied by adjusting nut 27. A further degree of friction operating in one direction of movement only may be provided by a resilient brake ring 25, which may be adjusted by screw 28 to which access is given by tube 29. The movement of the piston in cylinder 15 is limited by stops adjusted by turning discs 34, 38. The toe 1 may be hinged to the foot at 3 and controlled by spring 4, movement being limited by adjustable stop 42. Fig. 4 shows a modified frame for use with a shortened leg, comprising two parts 19 hinged together and respectively having attachments 23, 24 for the piston and the foot.
