598,291. Artificial legs. MORTENSEN, L. L. Oct. 27, 1943, No. 17738. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1942. [Class 81 (ii)] An artificial leg, comprising three members pivoted together at 16 and 18, is provided with a knee brake formed by a shoe member 54 and a drum 56 which are brought into resilient contact by means of link mechanism 60, 66, 74, 86 and springs 59, 61 when the toe portion of the foot member is moved downwardly relative to the lower leg member. The relatively strong spring 61 ensures a smooth operation of the brake, while the weaker spring 59 returns the brake shoe to the inoperative position. An adjusting link may be provided as shown at 72, or in the rod 74. The lower leg member may be formed in two portions 20 and 24 which telescope together and between which spacing washers 30 are provided to vary the length of the leg. The portion 20 and the foot member connected thereto may swivel relatively to the portion 24, the normal alignment being restored by a spring or rubber block. In a modification, Figs. 9-]2 (not shown), the brake drum is constituted by a U-shaped member, the ends of which encircle the knee bolt and are provided with split rings adjustable to tighten or loosen the knee joint ; in this modification also the spring 59 is replaced by a spring, or resilient device comprising a block of compressible material, in the rod 74. In a further modification, Fig. 14 (not shown), the brake operating mechanism is connected to the heel of the foot member.
